Back to School: Great Money Saving Apps

Share

Need to save money on campus? There’s more than one app for that. For students who own a smart phone there are countless free applications that can help make life easier, more efficient and less expensive. Here are my six favorites:

AllPoint Need cash fast but you’re nowhere near your bank’s ATM? This app can quickly find a surcharge-free ATM in a nearby location so you at least don’t have to suffer that extra $2 per transaction.

SnapTell: Compare prices and product reviews fast and easy.  Snaptell lets you take a photo of CDs, DVDs, books and video games to receive product feedback, as well as pricing data, instantly. You can also see where the item is in stock in your area.

Amazon Mobile: Sticking with the price comparison theme, get easy access to the biggest online retailer and browse the lowest prices on books, dorm accessories and school gear.

HowCast: A great way for Do-It-Yourselfers to save money. Learn how to make a quick repair, mix up your favorite cocktail or give yourself a French manicure with HowCast’s free downloadable how-to videos.

AroundMe: Looking for cheap eats off campus on a Saturday night? This app lets you quickly locate and map out the closest restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as hotels, stores, parking and more.

IM+ Lite: Nix SMS texting which can quickly add up to big bucks at the end of the month. This free version of IM+ supports major instant messaging networks so you can freely chat with your friends on AOL Instant Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo.
