Talking Money at Penn State

Share

I’m in Happy Valley! I’m honored to be back at my alma mater, Penn State, joining 12 fellow alumni recognized with the 2010 Alumni Achievement Award. My visit wouldn’t be complete without meeting with as many students as possible and discussing the realities of life after college and, of course, how to handle money.

It’s no secret that the job market for college grads is super tight. What’s more, starting salaries are lower. The National Association of Colleges and Employers said that average salary offers to 2010 bachelor’s degree candidates are down 1.7% to $47,673, compared to $48,515 last year.

Add to that an average $20,000 in student loan debt and a $4,000 credit card balance…you can quickly see how many young college grads start (and stay) behind the financial eight ball.

I’m hoping to talk to students about job search techniques, smart budgeting and how to make and save money. Stay tuned! My first class is at 8 am tomorrow (Friday). Bless the students who show up!

  3. thanks Jill and Ben! I am so thrilled to be back here and to meet so many amazing students and alumni. So proud to be a PSU’er!

  4. Thanks for speaking to FIN 100 classes Friday AM….the students loved you! On Monday, I am going to create a little spreadsheet exercise for the students called “Budgeting with Farnoosh” to translate your recommended percentages into real dollars based upon $3k per month take home. Should be fun!

Thanks again, congratulations on your Alumni Achievement award, and continued success with your new book!
