On Morning Meeting with Dylan Ratigan: Helping Students Afford College

I got a chance to touch on some of my college savings points (of course not all of them) on MSNBC this morning, as a guest on Dylan Ratigan’s show Morning Meeting. We were joined by Victor Sanchez, a student at UC Santa Cruz, who is participating in the student body rallies against the imminent 32% fee hike at UC school. Earlier the UC Regents recommended the fee hike. If passed by the full board, education costs at UC schools will go up by more than $2,500 by fall 2010, according to the LA Times. At this rate it would cost him the same to attend as anout-of-state student at neighboring state universities.
Watch this clip below as Dylan, Victor and I discuss the situation.
PS. Victor: I apologize for saying you’ve given up. What I meant to say is that I hope you don’t let this controversy defeat your and your classmates’ academic goals. I totally agree that it’s not fair that your fees are getting raised and I support your protests. But as you mobilize your fellow students, be aware that you have alternatives for affording and completing your degrees. At the end of the day you have to assume responsibility for your own future and strategize ways to work in and around the system.
